Neighborhood Billboard Takedown

In 2008, Scenic Houston was invited by Houston Mayor Bill White to advise him on a negotiation with the billboard company Clear Channel Outdoor to rid the City of as many of Clear Channel's "small" and "medium" billboards as possible. These billboards -- old, obsolete and poorly maintained – have blighted local streets and older residential neighborhoods for a generation.

As the only entity in Houston that serves as a counterweight to the billboard industry, Scenic Houston was well-positioned to provide the City the best body of research, history of billboard analysis and legal expertise on sign issues in Houston. The negotiation was successful. Under the terms of an April 2008 agreement, Clear Channel agreed to remove 831 billboards within nine months.  The Mayor announced the completion of the takedown arrangement in mid-January 2009. Scenic Houston applauds the White Administration and Houston City Council for this significant achievement.

These billboards have now been removed, much improving Houston's scenic landscape.
